ECBKA August Newsletter 2019

Llandeilo Show Saturday 17th August

We will have a stand with the observation hive at the Llandeilo Show on Saturday 17th August. As always, we would be very happy to have help from members setting up, packing away, selling honey, rolling candles and talking to the many visitors about bees and beekeeping. You don’t have to commit to a whole or even half day. If you can spare just an hour we will be delighted to see you. The show is held in the Cawdor Fields, Ffairfach, next to Ysgol Bro Dinefwr.

ECBKA Honey Show 2019

We will be holding our annual honey show at the Cilycwm Show on Monday 26th August. We are pleased to have Peter Guthrie judging for us this year so please make his visit worthwhile by submitting some entries. If you don’t have honey there are plenty of other classes you can enter. Don’t forget that there is a novice class for those who have not won a prize in any show previously.
The schedule for the honey classes is here.
Thankyou to Gavin Hall and Doug Taylor who have volunteered to be the stewards for the judge.

If you are attending the show don’t forget that we will also have our stand in the field with the observation hive. If you can spare some time on the stand we would love to see you.

Jars for Showing Honey

To enter one of the honey classes you will need two 454g / 1lb honey jars. We have suitable jars for sale at 30p each. I have some available for anyone at the Llandovery end and Keith has some at the apiary so please contact one of us if you need some.

Equipment for Loan

We have several extractors and an electric uncapping tray available for loan to members. They are likely to be in great demand at the moment so please make enquiries before you start uncapping your frames! Terri keeps track (or tries to) of where the equipment is and who has asked for it so please don’t just pass it on to someone if they haven’t contacted Terri.
Please ensure that honey equipment is properly cleaned after use. Cold water is quite adequate for cleaning and does not cause any wax deposits to melt and smear on the surfaces.
You may also be turning your mind to varroa control. We also have a Varrox Vapouriser for loan. Again, please make enquiries early as there is only one and demand is usually high.
You can contact Terri by email equipment@ec-bka.com

Frank’s Notes for August

Frank has kindly produced some bespoke notes for August 2019 with, as always, useful tips and essential information.

Apiary News

It is good to see so many of our new and novice beekeepers at the apiary each week and it is keeping Keith’s tea making skills up to scratch. To catch up on current apiary goings on Click here for Keith’s latest round-up.

September Meeting

Our first indoor meeting of the Autumn / Winter will be on Thursday 12th September in the Llangadog Hall. As is customary we will use that meeting for Nosema testing as well as a catch up of members after the summer break.

We will send out instructions for collecting bee samples for testing before the meeting.

Photos Wanted for Our Website

Now that our website is up to date again we would like to keep it that way and would welcome fresh images from members for inclusion.
There is a gallery, as yet unpopulated and we would also like to be able to regularly change the images heading the home page. If you have any photographs for inclusion on the website please forward them to admin@ec-bka.com.
We probably need to add a sentence or two there about permissions and not including faces of people who have not permitted publication. I’m not sure exactly what the whys and wherefores are.
